From NYC Grit to Miami Glam: Nico Petrone’s Hair Story

From NYC Grit to Miami Glam: Nico Petrone’s Hair Story

am Jul 09 2025
We're so excited to introduce you to this month's Karma Kollective spotlight: Nico Petrone! Based in sunny Miami, Nico brings serious New York roots, rock' n roll energy, and a whole lot of heart to his craft. His passion for hair goes beyond styling; it's about storytelling, creativity, and confidence. From favorite celeb dream clients to go-to hair hacks, Nico shares the moments and mantras that fuel his journey. Let's get into it! PROFILE Name: Nico Petrone Location: Miami, FL Social Media Handles: @hairbynicomiami   How did your hairstyling journey begin? Was there a specific moment or person that sparked your passion? "As an artist, I always loved finding different mediums to create art. It was ingrained in me that art brought people together; it allowed them to express what sometimes may not be personified. Establishing routes in New York City, every moment, every person, every step allowed me to draw inspiration and creativity, which I carry in my craft each and every day." What's a career moment you're really proud of? Big or small, something that reminded you, "This is what I'm meant to do." "The moment I chose to continue and be my best each and every single day, regardless of where society may portray that we should be. After the pandemic, I was fearful of the uncertainty of the beauty industry - but look at us here, five years later, and strong!"   Who or what has been your biggest inspiration as a stylist? A mentor, artist, era, or even a client story, tell us what fuels you. "Groundbreakers & Disrupters, they always fuel me. There is a sense of passion and confidence when an artist can start a trend and be followed by the masses. Artists who understand their why and their art help others find purpose."   If your styling approach had a personality, how would you describe it? Playful? Precise? Effortless? A little bit rock' n Roll? "Rock n' Roll meets 5th ave!"   You get to do one celeb's hair, dead or alive. Who is it, and what would you create? "Without a doubt, Tina Turner. The 80s showcased hair as a statement, as part of who you are, and who better than the queen of rock and Roll."   If you were a hair tool, what would you be, and why? "Blowdryer! One tool - so many looks."   What's your favorite hair hack that everyone needs to try? Apply dry shampoo after your blowout for body and texture. Wrap your hair around your iron and leave the ends out to create the perfect beach waves when your blowout is on its last days. How do you stay inspired creatively? Whether it's runway shows, street style, music videos, or just people-watching. "Art and Artists. I love watching people practice their craft. I support local and fellow artists because I believe their journey in creating art is as important as mine." When you're not styling hair, what lights you up? Tell us about your world beyond the chair, your hobbies, rituals, and guilty pleasures. "I love a good book. If you're reading this and you have an awesome book club, let me know!" If you could sit down with your younger self, what would you say to them? "Just start. There is no perfect timing. No one is coming to save you, you are enough. Get out there and just go! You're a New Yorker!" Final question: What does great hair mean to you? "Great hair is not only confidence, but the message and story you tell the world." Nico's story is a reminder that hairstyling is more than just a career; it's a form of art, connection, and self-expression. From channeling the bold energy of the '80s to drawing inspiration from everyday artists, his passion is evident in every detail. Follow @hairbynicomiami to see more of his work and creative world. And if you're ever in Miami, well, you know who to book!

We buy from their brands. We book their services. We credit their work. We share their stories. We invest in the next generation with the same intention they showed us. This is more than hair. It’s a movement, and it’s just getting started.
Titanium vs Ceramic Flat Iron: Which Is Right for Your Hair?

Titanium vs Ceramic Flat Iron: Which Is Right for Your Hair?

am Jun 11 2025
Choosing between a ceramic and titanium flat iron can make a noticeable difference in how you style your hair. While both plate materials can create smooth, straight results, they distribute and transfer heat differently and may work better for different hair types. So, which is better: titanium vs ceramic flat iron? Ceramic is often a good choice for fine, delicate, or easily damaged hair because it provides more even heat distribution and can be easier to control at lower temperatures. Titanium heats quickly and transfers heat efficiently, making it particularly useful for thick, coarse, or resistant hair that requires more power to style. The right flat iron ultimately depends on your hair type, texture, styling routine, and the temperature you need to achieve your desired result. Ceramic Ceramic isn’t just for fancy plates. It’s a heat-conducting material that distributes warmth evenly across the surface. That means no random hot spots and way less risk of frying your hair. If you’ve fine, delicate strands or are just starting your heat-styling journey, ceramic is gentle, forgiving, and ideal for at-home use. Why You’ll Love It: Even heat means less damage Perfect for fine to medium hair Great for beginners Delivers a healthy-looking shine (just give it a bit more time to heat up) SHOP CERAMIC FLAT IRONS: Supreme Ceramic, Style & Go Titanium Titanium is sleek, fast, and powerful. Think of it like the sports car of flat irons. It heats up in seconds, retains heat like a champ, and gets your hair ultra-straight, super shiny, and frizz-free in record time. If your hair is thick, curly, coarse, or just plain stubborn, this one’s for you. Why You’ll Love It: Heats up lightning fast Delivers maximum shine Tames frizz and curls like a pro Built to last with no peeling or chipping SHOP TITANIUM FLAT IRONS: Spectrum 2", Beauty and the Breeze, UltraSonic  Heating Time Titanium heats up faster and stays hot longer, which means quicker styling. Ceramic takes a little more time to reach its full potential but offers a gentler, more controlled experience. Shine Factor Both produce negative ions that help boost shine, but titanium creates more. If glossy, high-glam hair is your goal, it wins this round. Durability Titanium is tough and corrosion-resistant. Ceramic plates can wear down or chip over time with heavy use. Hair Type Compatibility Ceramic is best for fine, thin, or damaged hair. It’s kind to strands and ideal for everyday use. Titanium is best for thick, curly, or coarse hair. It gets the job done fast and locks in styles longer. Which Is Better for Your Hair Type? Hair Type Recommended Plate Why Fine Ceramic More controlled, even heat Thin Ceramic Easier to style at lower temperatures Medium Ceramic or Titanium Depends on texture Thick Titanium Efficient heat transfer Coarse Titanium More power for resistant hair Curly Titanium or ceramic Depends on density and desired result Damaged Ceramic Focus on lower, controlled heat If you want a sleek, salon-style finish in minutes and have hair that needs a bit more muscle, go for a titanium flat iron. However, if you're working with finer strands and want to avoid heat damage while still achieving a smooth, styled look, ceramic is the way to go. Take a moment to assess your hair type and styling goals. With the right flat iron, you’ll be on your way to your best hair day yet. SHOP ALL FLAT IRONS

So, what makes infrared so special—and why is it popping up in all the best pro-level flat irons, blow dryers, and curling wands? Let's break it down. 👇 What Is Infrared Heat? That means faster results, less damage, and way more shine. 6 Reasons to Switch to Infrared Hair Tools 1. Less Damage, More Glow Infrared heat is kinder to your strands. By heating hair evenly and at a lower temperature, it helps protect your cuticle and prevent that fried, brittle feeling over time. ➡️ Try the Spectrum 2" Infrared Flat Iron, designed to deliver sleek, glassy styles without damage. 2. Faster Styling—Yes, Please Infrared tools cut your styling time in half. Whether you're smoothing, curling, or blowing out, infrared heat gets the job done quicker (and safer), especially if you have thick or coarse hair. ➡️ Need speed? Shiny, Healthy-Looking Hair Infrared doesn't just style—it helps enhance your hair's overall look and feel. Expect high shine, soft texture, and serious bounce. ➡️ Pair your tool with our Unicorn Hair Oil for next-level shine. 5. Scalp-Friendly Vibes Got a sensitive scalp? Infrared tools deliver heat more gently, making them an excellent choice for anyone prone to irritation or inflammation. ➡️ Pro tip: Use our Restorative Liquid Gold Hair Serum post-style to nourish your hair. 6. Good Hair Days That Last Because infrared heat styles from within, your look holds its shape longer, whether sleek and straight or full-on curls. ➡️ Finish off your look with the Fly Girl Flyaway Stick. Natural Shampoo & Conditioner

Natural Shampoo & Conditioner

am Feb 06 2025
The irony in conventional hair products – who are we kidding, ALL personal care products – is that they can end up doing more harm than good. The commercial shampoos and conditioners meant to create vibrant, soft & beautiful locks are loaded with harsh chemicals that end up stripping the hair of its inherent beauty. Did you know that calcium deposits in your shower can be caused by your chemical-laden bath products? Imagine what they could be doing to your hair, your body and the waterways once they wash down the drain! Not to mention whether they test the products on our furry friends. It’s amazing how simple it is to achieve the seemingly-elusive results you’ve always been after if you trade in the can’t-even-pronounce ingredients for just a couple of household items that provide nature’s answer to a head of gorgeous hair. Give these easy do-it-yourself (DIY) recipes a try, and you’ll never waste money or create waste on the store-bought stuff again. Homemade Shampoo Put an old shampoo bottle to good recycled use by mixing the following ingredients together for your very own shampoo. 1 cup pure liquid castile soap 1 cup green tea (brewed for 30 minutes) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon honey Use as is, or depending upon your hair type, add an herbal infusion to replace the green tea in the above recipe. Use a handful of fresh herbs or a spoonful of dried herbs and a cup of boiling water to prepare the infusion, steeping for 30 minutes. Here are some suggestions for different hair types (and predicaments): for dark hair: sage leaves for greasy hair: yarrow for fair hair: marigold flowers for dandruff: a mixture of nettle leaves and burdock roots Homemade Conditioner Use a simple vinegar rinse as a conditioner 2-3 times a week, and not only will you be truly surprised at the results – both shiny and detangled locks – you’ll wonder how you ever bought into the whole high-priced, toxic conditioner notion in the first place. What you’ll need: 5 cups of hot water 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 sprig of rosemary 1 bag of your favorite herbal tea, for fragrance To make your vinegar rinse, place the water in a container of your choice (old conditioner bottle). Then, add the rest of the ingredients. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes. Use about 3/4 of a cup of the rinse each time you condition, shaking up the bottle prior.
Naturally Rehydrating Hair

Naturally Rehydrating Hair

am Feb 06 2025
Taking good care of your hair, eating a healthy diet, using quality hair care products meant for your hair type and using some over-the-counter conditioners can prevent it from drying out. Plus, there are many simple home remedies that can help treat dry hair and restore its health and shine. Olive Oil Olive oil is the most popular home remedy for dry hair. The rich vitamin E and antioxidant content present in olive oil help heal damaged hair by sealing the cuticle, or outer layer, with moisture. Olive oil can be used as a hot oil hair treatment to strengthen, add shine and restore moisture to very dry hair. Put enough olive oil for the length of your hair in a cup or bowl and slightly warm it in a microwave. Apply the warm oil thoroughly over your scalp and hair shafts. Massage your scalp gently for five to 10 minutes. Cover your hair with a warm towel and leave the oil on overnight, or at least for 30 minutes. Finally, shampoo and condition your hair with our Argan Oil infused Rejuvenating Shampoo & Conditioner. Do this at least once a week to give your hair much-needed nourishment and care. Note: You can also use coconut oil, almond oil, castor oil, jojoba oil or corn oil for this hot oil treatment. Mayonnaise Mayonnaise is an excellent ingredient for treating dry hair at home. It contains lots of protein that will help make your hair soft and shiny. Measure out one cup of full-fat mayonnaise. Apply a thick layer of it on slightly damp hair and scalp. Massage the mayonnaise into your scalp and then work it through your hair to the ends. Cover your hair and head with a plastic cap for about an hour. Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water and then shampoo as usual. Repeat weekly to hydrate very dry hair. Eggs Eggs are also very helpful for dry and damaged hair. A good source of protein and lecithin, eggs help strengthen and repair damaged and lifeless hair by adding moisture, shine, and texture to it. Whip an egg white thoroughly along with two tablespoons of lukewarm water. Apply the mixture to your damp hair and scalp and massage with your fingertips in a circular motion for 15 minutes. Then shampoo your hair with cool water. Do this once or twice a week, depending on the condition of your hair. Mix together three eggs, two tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey. Apply this mixture to damp hair and scalp. Cover your head with a shower cap for about 30 minutes, and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo and cool water. Do this once a week to make your hair soft and silky. Beer Beer works as an excellent hair conditioner. The protein in beer helps repair damaged hair cuticles and nourish hair follicles, which in turn makes your hair shiny and smooth. Shampoo your hair as usual and then spray a small amount of beer onto your hair. Allow your hair to dry on its own. When it is dry, your hair will look smooth and shiny. You can also spray beer onto your hair before blow drying or styling your hair. Note: The smell of beer will not remain on your hair if you let your hair dry naturally. Avocado The saturated fats, vitamins A and E, protein and various other minerals in avocado are highly beneficial for dry and damaged hair. Avocado also helps add moisture to dry hair shafts and strengthen your hair. Mash one ripe, peeled avocado. Mix in one teaspoon each of wheat-germ oil and jojoba oil to make a smooth paste. Apply the mixture on freshly washed hair, from the roots to the ends. Cover your hair with a shower cap. Leave it on for half an hour and then shampoo your hair with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy once or twice a week. Mash a ripe, peeled avocado and add two tablespoons of olive oil to it. Mix well until the consistency is thick and smooth. Shampoo and rinse your hair. Apply the mixture to your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Finally, rinse your hair. Do this once a week. Bananas Bananas are another excellent ingredient for treating extremely dry and damaged hair. The high potassium and moisture content in bananas prevents split ends, and softens and improves the elasticity of your hair. Mash one ripe or overripe banana and spread it thoroughly on your hair, from the roots to the ends. Leave it on for up to an hour and then rinse your hair with lukewarm water. Do this once a week for effective results. Alternatively, mix one ripe or overripe banana, one tablespoon of almond oil and two tablespoons of honey. Apply this hair mask on your hair thoroughly. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse well with lukewarm water. Follow this remedy once week to enjoy smooth and shiny hair. Source: top10homeremedies.com
The Healing Powers of the Hair

The Healing Powers of the Hair

am Feb 06 2025
Did you know that the hair on your head actually has healing powers? Think about the sensation you get when you hairs stand on end….. This usually happens when you instinctively know that something is not right. What are your hairs trying to tell you? It is believed that the tips of your hair are like antennae that gather energy from the Universe in order to stimulate higher levels of consciousness and creativity. Hair is a natural extension of the nervous system and is said to transmit important information to the brain. It is also believed to balance the entire electromagnetic field of your body, which in turn can help you to increase your life force, vitality and intuition. Many years ago, cutting hair was unheard of as it was believed to be an important extension of identity and heritage. In fact, only slaves would have their hair cut as it was believed to punish them into submission and take away their energy and power. When Genghis Khan conquered China, he also ordered the people to cut their hair and have bangs as this was believed to inhibit the development of their third eye, intuition and knowledge. To this day, there are many cultures that do not believe in cutting hair in order to conserve their energy and spiritual abilities. The Native Americans for example, believe that through their hair they can connect to nature and the life force around them. It was also proven during the Vietnam war that Native Americans with longer hair were able to scout the land using their intuition better than those in similar tribes who had their hair cut. The Sikh culture also believe that cutting hair can inhibit spiritual development and can lead to poor health. They instead, tie their hair in a what is known as a rishi knot on the top of their heads. This is believed to help control and regulate the flow of energy through the body and can assist in attaining higher levels of consciousness. It is believed that cut hair takes about three years to regain its ability to send out and receive vital energy from the Universe. It is almost like cutting your hair makes your intuitive senses numb to the world around you. Studies have also found that keratin, the protein in hair contains a crystalline structure that is similar to those of sacred crystals and gemstones. So, how can you protect the receptiveness of your hair? 1.) Use Natural hair products: Placing chemicals on your hair and scalp is not only bad for you but it can also dull your receptive abilities. Choose natural or organic shampoos, conditioners and treatments. 2.) Avoid Trims: It has been drilled in to us that trimmed hair is healthy hair, but why not work from the inside instead? Keep your hair healthy by eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. In order to nourish your hair and protect it from split or dry ends, apply a natural treatment of coconut or almond oil overnight. 3.) Avoid Blow Drying: Try to let your hair naturally dry in the sun. This is said to increase Vitamin D absorption and raise the vitality of your life force. Hair dryers also emit electricity which can tamper with the sensitivity of your hair and your third eye chakra. 4.) Don’t Over Shampoo: Allow your natural oils on your scalp to clean and protect your hair. Only shampoo when you absolutely have to. 5.) Wash After Stress: It is believed that after an emotional argument or stress that the hair can build up with negative energy. Washing your scalp after a stressful day can help to release and cleanse this energy. 6.) Brush with a Wooden Comb: Ditch the plastic and metal brush and go for a natural one made of wood. This is said to maintain the energy surrounding your crown chakra and to keep your electromagnetic field in tact. Wood is the preferred medium as it prevents static electricity and can help stimulate the scalp energy instead. 7.) Hair Styling: Many Yogis believe that you should wear your hair up during the day to help absorb life force energy and to stimulate the pineal gland and to keep it down at night to help absorb lunar energy and enhance spiritual perception. The hair on our head and body is powerful and gives us clues, not just about our physical body but also our emotional and spiritual body as well. Try adopting some of these practices into your routine and see if you notice a difference in your energy and intuition. REF: WWW.FOREVERCONSCIOUS.COM

7 Ways To Get Heatless Curls

am Feb 06 2025
Tight curls, gentle and soft curls, wavy hair – curls are amazing. And the best part is that they flatter just about any type of hair, and on any length. But if you’re blessed with straight hair, (and we say blessed because straight hair looks amazing too, right?) then what do you do? Hair curling is an option, but what about hair damage? Fortunately, there are several techniques that teach you how to curl hair without a curling iron or tongs. We’ve put down the fastest and the best ways for hair curling without heat. #1: Old t-shirt for New Curls Wash your hair the way you usually do. Blot it dry with a towel. Cut a t-shirt in long strips from the neck to the hem. The thinner the strip, the tighter the curls. Take a small section of your hair, and roll the strip and the hair upwards till your scalp (or till as much as you want). Roll inwards so the curls turn towards your neck. Tie the end of the strip to hold the hair in place. Repeat this for all the hair. Let your hair dry completely before removing the strips. #2: Headband for Retro Curls Wash your hair the way you usually do. Blot it dry with a towel. Slip a headband around your head. Take sections of your hair and wrap around the hairband until all the hair is within the band. Secure loose ends with pins. Let your hair dry completely. Gently remove the headband and pins, and unleash your curls. #3: Braiding for Natural Waves Wash your hair the way you usually do. Blot it dry with a towel. Make a center parting and tie two ponytails. Braid the two ponytails and secure the end with a rubber band. For tight curls, make more braids, for looser curls, make just one braid. Let your hair dry completely. Gently loosen the braids and shake your curls free. #4: Sock Bun Waves Take an old sock with the toe part cut out and roll it into a doughnut shape. Wash your hair the way you usually do. Blot it dry with a towel. Pull your hair into a ponytail at the top of your head. Pull your ponytail through the sock. Wrap the hair and tuck it in securely. Roll the sock to include more hair. Continue rolling and tucking until you reach the top of your head. Secure the bun with the help of clips. Sleep in with the bun and loosen it in the morning for gorgeous tumbling waves. #5: Waves are Easy Wet your hair lightly unless you’ve just washed it. Detangle your hair and make a center parting. Twist each section tightly to form a bun on the two sides of your head. Let your hair dry overnight. Gently open the buns the next morning and voila! Waves! #6: Roll with it Get your hands on some hair rollers. Big rollers give big curls, and small ones give tighter curls. Wash and condition your hair, and blot it with a towel. Separate a section, roll it and immediately encase it in a roller. Secure the roller as per instructions. Repeat the step until all hair is sheathed in rollers. Leave untouched for 4-5 hours. Gently remove the rollers and enjoy the curls. #7: Twist & Curl Wash your hair the way you usually do. Then dry it with a soft towel. Comb your hair thoroughly and make a center parting. Twist each section until it resembles a tight coil. Secure it to the top of your head with a clip. Do the same to the other side. Allow your hair to dry overnight. Remove the clips and enjoy your curls. You are thinking that the above methods can only be used in curling long and medium hair lengths, right? Well, if you are wondering how to curl short hair without a curler, then we can assure you that, the methods mentioned above are workable on short lengths of hair. Rather the braiding and the headband roll methods are best for short hair, and will give you waves with an oomph!

Homemade Hair Masks

am Feb 06 2025
It’s not hard to make a mask for your hair. In fact, it will involve a lot of the same ingredients you would use for a mask for your skin. The application process is different, obviously, but making and using the homemade hair mask will be just as simple! COCONUT OIL HAIR MASK This is the most simple homemade hair mask you can make. It only has one ingredient – coconut oil! All you need for this is about a quarter of a cup of warmed coconut oil. (It needs to be in its liquid state.) Simply apply it to your hair (wet or dry, it doesn’t really matter) and leave it in for at least an hour. You’ll want to be in the bathtub for this, or well-covered with a towel. If you’re going to continue going about your chores or even keep this treatment on overnight, make sure you take the necessary precautions, like a shower cap. Coconut oil will stain clothing and linens. When you’re finished with your treatment, wash the coconut oil out of your hair and carry on as normal. AVOCADO & EGG YOLK Turns out egg really is a great thing to put in your hair. For a moisturizing, restorative, make-it-shine homemade hair mask, mix it with some avocado! ½ an avocado 2 egg yolks Mix ingredients well. Apply to wet or dry hair and allow to sit for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and washing hair. YOGURT, HONEY & OLIVE OIL HAIR MASK Honey might not sound like something you want to put on your hair, and I understand. It’s like the stickiest substance found in nature. But when you mix it with a little yogurt and olive oil, it’s an important component to helping get your hair back in shape. 1 tsp olive oil 1 Tbsp honey ¼ cup yogurt Mix the ingredients well. Apply to damp hair, and allow to sit for 15-2o minutes. Rinse and wash your hair, and allow to dry as normal. BANANNA HAIR MASK Bananas are simply the best fruits one can find year-round. They are incredible beauty fruits, as they are super rich in potassium, vitamins, anti-oxidants, and natural oils. Use a homemade banana hair mask for its amazing moisturizing properties. The moisture boost will strengthen your hair to prevent breakage and split ends, maintain your natural hair elasticity, and make your hair bouncy and healthy. 1 to 2 overripe bananas 1 teaspoon coconut oil 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 tablespoon honey Blend the bananas very smoothly, until there are absolutely no chunks or teeny banana pieces. This is not the recipe to be cutting corners—put in the time for the fine blending. Add the honey and coconut and olive oil to your delicious mixture and blend again. Slather the smoothie into your hair, and let it settle and sink into your scalp for at least five minutes. Thoroughly rinse the mixture out with warm water. Afterward, take your time to comb through your hair. You want to make sure you have removed any pieces you may not have blended thoroughly. Do a final rinse. Because bananas smell delicious, you need not shampoo. STRAWBERRY HAIR MASK Strawberries are tart fruits, loaded with vitamin C, which makes them perfect for controlling scalp oil. They help rinse away excess oil build-up and are very gentle in doing so. Strawberries also regulate the scalp’s natural pH. Use strawberries in your homemade hair mask for glossy, shiny hair! 1 handful of fresh strawberries (roughly seven for medium-length hair) 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1 tablespoon honey Blend the ingredients to form a fine puree of sorts. Then apply the mixture evenly throughout damp hair. Rinse well with warm water. You don’t even need organic shampoo, because strawberries have their own mouth-watering delicious smell. Lastly, remember, the longer you keep the hair masks on, the deeper the nutrients will sink into your scalp, nourishing and energizing the hair roots. The time you keep your hair mask on will also impact how soft your hair will become.

How To Get A Perfect Blowout

am Feb 06 2025
Doing your own blowout is a lot like attempting a soufflé—one false move and it all goes south. The surefire recipe for a good hair day? Strong biceps, patience, and these ten pro tips. SWITCH YOUR SHOWER LINEUP If you’re after bouncy hair, skip shampoos and conditioners that bill themselves as moisturizing or damage-repairing—they contain ingredients that weigh down even thick hair. Go for ones labeled volumizing, which are lighter. NOW LEAVE THE BATHROOM It might seem like the obvious place to style your hair, but if it’s at all humid, your blowout will frizz. Move the whole shebang to another room. GET IN ON A SECRET Quick-dry sprays actually work. They contain ingredients, like isododecane, that wick water off hair so it dries faster. DRINK COFFEE. CHECK YOUR EMAIL. Procrastinating before you jump right in to blow-drying can actually make your hair look better. If you try to style soaking-wet hair, it will take forever, and you’ll probably give up before your hair is completely smooth. Rough-dry your hair any which way until it’s barely damp, or let it air-dry for about 20 minutes. HOLD OFF ON MOUSE If you’re after smooth results, mousses (and gels, and anything with hold) work best when you apply them to damp hair and then blow-dry immediately. Letting them sit in hair while it air-dries for even ten minutes can freeze kinks and waves in place so they can’t be undone with a brush and a dryer. Oils, leave-in conditioners, and other anti-frizz products should be applied right away. ALWAYS TACKLE BANGS FIRST For side swept bangs, use a medium-size round boar-bristle brush and sweep them to one side. If your bangs are blunt, start by brushing them from side to side with a paddle brush as you dry them so they’re polished but not too flat. KNOW WHEN TO USE IONS An ionic dryer flattens the cuticle, which is great if you want your hair to be straight and not puffy. If your aim is lots of volume, ditch the ionic dryer. DON’T LET A BLOWOUT DEFLATE The difference between straight and lank is a two- to three-inch round boar-bristle brush. Use it to stretch your hair up slightly at the roots and then down toward your shoulders in a slight arc, pulling the brush straight through the ends. Move quickly to minimize damage. COUNT TO FIVE FOR VOLUME When you let hair cool for a few seconds on the round brush, it dries bouncier. Pull your hair up toward the ceiling, and then roll the brush down the length of your hair and back up. Keep each section of hair wound around the bristles for about four or five seconds after you’ve dried it. CHECK YOUR WORK Once you think your hair is dry, feel around for damp spots. If you want your blowout to last, hair needs to be 100% dry. Otherwise it will frizz and volume won’t last.
